Online Education (master Of Science In Communication)

The Master of Science Communication Outreach is an exciting one-year graduate program in communication for science, engineering and technology graduates. All students in the program are financially supported by a scholarship that is paid fortnightly throughout the program. To be eligible for this scholarship you must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.

For about 14 weeks of the 40 week program, students tour regional Australia while working for the Shell Questacon Science Circus. Each year, we travel to different locations. As well as undertaking practical training on the road, there is also a little ‘down time’ to relax and unwind.
Being able to transform scientific information into accessible, understandable knowledge for the public is the key business of a science communicator. Science communicators combine skills in written and verbal communication with their scientific knowledge, so they can bridge the gap between the scientific community and the public.

Career prospects

Graduates of the program have gone on to work in diverse and exciting areas across the field of science communication, including:

television stations and radio networks in Australia e.g. for Triple J, Catalyst and Carbon Cops
magazines including New Scientist and Scienttrific
the Edinburgh International Science Festival
the GridTalk grid computing project in the European Union at CERN, Switzerland
the Children”s Cancer Institute
the Science Foundation for Physics
as an Australian Youth Ambassador for Development teaching science in the Maldives
as a Science Outreach Officer
as a science and maths trainer at the Vanuatu Institute of Technology.

The master’s degree offers students a possibility to specialize in four subdisciplines of communication sciences as practiced at K.U.Leuven. These subdisciplines are media culture, information and communication technology, marketing communication and media effects. A balance is maintained between specialization on the one hand and a more broad deepening of insight into the domain of communication and media research on the other hand.

Students are expected to specialize in a broad field of specialization, the methods, techniques, theories, hypotheses and research status quo of which they must acquaint themselves with. At the master level, the student is expected to display a
large amount of self-motivation, both in colleges and in other forms of study.

Upon finishing the degree, the student will have:
– a specialist knowledge of the theory, research and history of the discipline of his/her chosen major;
– the ability to analyze publications about the discipline, to relate them to various perspectives and developments and to pass a well-founded judgement on their quality;
– the ability to perform autonomous research in the subdiscipline of his/her specialization;
– required intellectual skills, such as to apply and question argumentations in the field of study; to assume a point of view in the scientific discourse and critically consider its validity; to be able to report on his/her research and solutions to fellow scholars and non-scholars; to be able to discuss the latest developments in the field of study and their effects on society; to develop an attitude of lifelong learning.

The Master of Science in Communication Program (MSC) is a comprehensive management and leadership program that provides a broad-based foundation of principles that can successfully be applied to many professional fields.
MSC draws emerging talent and senior-level managers alike from for-profit, non-profit, and government sectors. Designed for the working professional, MSC is structured to be consistent with student needs, providing flexibility and the opportunity to immediately put classroom experience into real-world practice. Classes are offered during one full day of instruction each week on Saturday. Students enrolled in MSC meet their career goals, improve their competitive edge, obtain a master”s degree, and are able to work full-time throughout the program. It addresses the growing need for theory-grounded communication professionals in business, government and the non-profit sectors, including: public relations practitioners, advertising writers, educators, graphic designers, consultants, training and development professionals, media policy experts, print and electronic journalists — and indeed anyone who must know how to create, manage and assess communication initiatives in a global environment. The MSC program offers students a strong foundation in communication theory and methodology, and encourages application in such emphasis areas as organizational, technological, instructional, and cultural communication.

The meaning of studying graphs has changed in essence. Instead of learning the mathematics of how to make the plot itself the student studies the curve and experiments with its properties. The good student is not the one that does the plot accurately but is the one that understands the behavior of the curve at different points.

Calculators are like special purpose computers that are dedicated to certain mathematics applications. They are very portable and much more affordable. Moreover, they are much easier to use than personal computers and any school laboratory can have enough calculators for students of a single classroom.

First of all I would like to say that there are many types of calculators. For example there are graphing calculators, algebra calculators, matrices calculators etc. One should choose the one suitable for the required task. For example when one needs to experiment with graphing he can use the graphing calculator and do the algebraic manipulations on his own. This keeps the balance between paper and pencil skills and the use of calculators.

Now is the important question of how to build mathematics laboratory experiments. Before the start of any laboratory work the teacher should check that the laboratory has enough calculators for each and every student. It is very important that each student has his own calculator. If two students use one tool as a team one student may be faster than the other. He will pick up the idea faster and start implementing faster. The second student will rely on the first student and will be absent minded in class and he will not benefit. This is a serious problem that has many complications. It could lead to the student hating mathematics all together despite that he may be talented in mathematics.

I would like to share an experience that I had when I was teaching a laboratory in university. The laboratory contained fewer computers than students so some students had to share the same computer. The first few labs were demonstrations on how to use the software tools. Some students had higher pace in understanding. This caused that their partners became so dependent on them that they did not work and did not understand how to use the tools. This happened although they were mature university students. One would imagine now what would happen with little infants with much more limited communication experiences.

Once the number of calculators is settled one is now ready to prepare the first laboratory experiment. The first session should be on how to use the calculator. All the calculators in the laboratory should be the same brand and model in order to have the same method of use. The student should be taught how to use all the functions that will be used during the laboratory classes. They should get enough time experimenting with the use of these functions independently. It is crucial that they thoroughly understand how to use the calculators before given any laboratory experiments.

O nce the students are familiar with calculators they can be given the first experiments. I am going to go through a model that would hopefully inspire teachers on how to create laboratory experiments.
Imagine one wants to teach students the equation of a straight line y= mx + c. The teacher Should ask the students to use the calculator and plot this equation using different values for the symbols. After letting the student experiment a bit he should be asked that what should we do if we want the line to be steep? What should we do if we want to decrease the steepness of the line? How to make the line go uphill? How to make the line go downhill? After experimenting with real numbers the students should be able to answer these questions easily and understand and appreciate the significance of every symbol of the equation of the straight line.

Once the student understands the equation of straight line as an abstract mathematical concept he can start to learn examples of real life problems using the straight line equation .Now we can let him plot the relation between distance and time as a straight line relationship i.e. choose an example where the relation between distance and time is a straight line and give it to the students for experimenting.

It is important for the student to appreciate that the symbols of the equation this time are of real life quantities and not abstract quantities. This is the basic idea of creating mathematics laboratory experiments that will significantly improve student abilities and interest in the subject.

CORRELATION STUDIES IN EDUCATION

ABSTRACT This paper reviewed importance of correlation studies in educational research. The paper concluded that correlation is used to find relationship between variables, determined degree of association etc. and recommendation was made at the end of the paper. INTRODUCTION Correlational study is very important in research. This is obvious in the ways it has been used in researches today in sciences, education, engineering etc. correlational study is used to find relationships between variables, degree of relationships, association among parameters, existing influences between variables, determine the degree of freedom, variability in performance, strength of variations in strength of relationships. The correlation is one of the most common and most useful statistics. A correlation is a single number that describes the degree of relationship between two variables. IMPORTANCE OF CORRELATION Darko and Ansa-Asare (2009) cited the use of correlation to establish relationships and interactions between parameters. Correlation does not only used to find out relationship that exists between variables, it can also be used to determine the degree of relationships and variability between students’ performance in examination as opined by Oluwatayo (2007). Abe (2007) confirmed that correlation can be used to determine the strength of relationship between subjects and variations in strength of relationships of scores in subjects. Correlation is a good instrument to be used to analyse relationship between performances of students as observed by Ige (2007). Boampong, Acquah and Achiamaa (2009) used correlation to assess linear association among studied quantitative parameters. Boampong, Acqua, Sam-Awortwi and Ofori (2010) stated that correlation could be used to test for association among measured parameters. Correlation allows the researcher to investigate naturally occurring variables that maybe unethical or impractical to test experimentally. For example, it would be unethical to conduct an experiment on whether smoking causes lung cancer. Mcleod (2008) opined that correlation identifies variables and looks for a relationship between them. Correlation allows the researcher to clearly and easily see if there is a relationship between variables. This can then be displayed in a graphical form. The correlation is one of the most common and most useful statistics. He stressed further that correlation is a single number that describes the degree of relationship between two variables. Lanthier (2011) looked at correlation as a way to measure how associated or related two variables are. She explains further that in a correlational study, the researcher is measuring conditions that already exist and finding out in what way pairs of variables are related. Lanthier (2011) opined that the researcher looks at things that already exist and determines if and in what way those things are related to each other and that, purpose of doing correlations is to allow us to make a prediction about one variable based on what we know about another variable. She believed when we know there is a correlation between two variables, we can make a prediction. We can make predictions about things when we know about correlations. If two variables are correlated, we can predict one based on the other. Mcleod (2008) observed that an important area where correlation is widely used is in the study of intelligence where research has been carried out to test the strength of the association between the I.Q. levels of identical and non-identical twins. Correlation research is a form of analysis in which you correlate one variable with another to determine if there is a relationship between them. It is used as a first step prior to experimentation, when experiments cannot be conducted (for ethical or practical reasons). In correlation research you do not manipulate a variable, you gather information through: Observation, Surveys or Questionnaires, and Information Correlation is concerned with describing the degree of relationship between variables. Researchers can use one variable to make predictions about another variable, that correlation can be used to find interrelation between variables. Minium, King & Bear (1993) posited that correlation can be used mainly to determine the degree of association between variables, and also to make prediction about an event. To establish reliability of a test, for example, we would want to know the extent of initial performance on the same test at a subsequent time. Minium et al (1993) opined that correlation is used in determining the degree of association between two variables and predicting a person’s standing in associated variable. John and Arthur (1991) viewed that when two variables are examined for their correlation; it is usually for the purpose of predicting one of them. Most correlation studies are initiated based on the desire to examine and explain the changing value of this variable. Horst (1963) said correlation measures the co variation in the magnitude of two things. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION Correlation is very important in educational research as it could be used to find out relationship between variables, determine degree of association, for prediction about one variable and strength of a relationship. Having reviewed role of correlation in educational research it is therefore suggested that institutions of learning should design a course especially for correlation study. This will help students to apply correlation statistics correctly in research.
